Artists in Residence

Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior’s Artist in Residence program has offered creative retreats for artists since 2016.

For 2026, residencies can be 4 days, 5 days or 8 days in length in July and August.  Cost is $110 to cover the Charter boat transportation to Porphyry Island from Silver Islet. Plus $15/night for overnight accommodations.  Artists are expected to bring their own food for the duration of their stay.  A food order from a local grocery store may be picked-up by our staff if you are coming from out of town.

Artists receive a private bedroom in a shared staff residence and studio space.

If you’d like, we can offer you space to display your work in our Gordon Graham gallery for the duration of your residency.  We also have a Gift Shop through which you may sell your work to visitors to Porphyry Island during your stay.  No commission is charged for this opportunity.

As Porphyry Island is open to the public, we expect artists to engage with our visitors, explaining their projects to interested guests.

New this year: Artists may propose to offer a scheduled workshop for the public.  If there is sufficient interest and enrolment, the artist may be paid for facilitating the workshop and/or given credit towards their Artist in Residence fees. Rates depend on the nature of the workshop and number of participants and will be negotiated with the artist upon acceptance into the residency program.

Applications for Summer 2026 opportunities are open until midnight on May 20 or until vacancies are filled.
