Trowbridge Island Lighthouse

Trowbridge Light Station

New this year Tours are being featured. This authentic North Shore lighthouse, complete with its historic Fresnel Lens, stands at the base of the Sleeping Giant, surrounded by the vast waters of Lake Superior. The light tower is a smaller version of the iconic Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse in Newfoundland. The island derives its name from Charles A. Trowbridge, a New York shareholder of the now-flooded Silver Islet Mine, who was married to Ms. Alexander Sibley, a member of another prominent local family.

The island is leased from the Department of Fisheries by Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior, the organization responsible for managing the site. Each year, a cleanup effort is organized, and host keepers are working this season to begin restoring the area. While some parts of the site are closed to visitors, the exterior of the Keeper’s Dwelling has recently been touched up, though the interior remains off-limits.

In 2024, the lighthouse marked its 100th year of service, not only as a vital aid to navigation but also as an emerging tourism destination. This milestone celebrates its enduring legacy and growing appeal to visitors. Book a Tour
