Volunteers play a vital role in the lighthouse program, dedicating well over 2,000 hours last year. The host keeper initiative is a key component in ensuring a pleasant experience for visitors to the lighthouse.
The host keeper program runs during the summer season, inviting small families, couples, or individuals to spend a week at the lighthouse. This immersive experience includes accommodation, assigned chores, project work, and leisure time to explore the island’s attractions.
Host keepers arrive at Silver Islet Dock on Sundays and are ferried to the island for an introductory historical tour and safety briefing. Accommodations are provided in the communal Bunk House, offering a camping-like setting with shared facilities.
Mondays begin with an orientation meeting, health and safety review, and a walkthrough of the grounds to outline tasks and projects. Daily chores, such as dishwashing and meal preparation, are part of the routine. Leisure activities like hiking, swimming, sauna use, and recreational equipment are available.
The experience concludes the following Sunday with a return charter to the mainland. Costs associated with the program are discussed during the February application process. The program operates from the last week of June to the first week of September, with Porphyry serving as the primary hub. Previous experience with CLLS is necessary for applications to Trowbridge and No.10. Applications are accepted annually, and the team looks forward to receiving yours and addressing any queries you may have.
